How to Help Covid19 Patients with Chinese Herbs
I have seen quite a few Covid-19 patients through Zoom or Facetime since March. I prescribed herbs for them. None of my patients need to go to hospital. Viral tests turn negative after taking herbs for one to two weeks. Symptoms completely go away in a couple of weeks.
There are two major groups of symptoms. One is from heat inside of the Lungs including symptoms such as fever, headaches, dry cough, sweating, etc. Patients’ tongue is red in color like the picture below. Modified Bai Hu Tang (white tiger decoction) is the formula I like to use.
The other group of symptoms concentrate on digestive symptoms like low grade fever, nausea, diarrhea, loss of smell and tastes. My diagnosis is damp heat in spleen and stomach. Patients have thick tongue coating like the picture below. Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San (Agastache Powder to Rectify Qi) with modification is a good formula.
Patients who have precondition such as diabetes, autoimmune diseases, allergies etc. may have more severe symptoms of both respiratory system and digestive system. Patients may have purple tongue with thick and sticky tongue coating (picture below). The combination of last two herbal formulas can be used.
No matter what the major symptom, this disease is caused by virus. In the language of Chinese medicine, it is the invasion of pathogenic factors, causing heat or damp heat inside of the body. We need to release the exterior and clear heat drain dampness from interior of the body.
Another very important point is that Covid-19 test negative does not mean patients totally heal. I saw many patients still have symptoms such as dry cough, difficult concentration or fatigue weeks or even months after viral test negative. That is due to lingering heat still stay inside of the body. Herbs to clear heat help that too.
Since there are no specific drugs so far, based on my experience, Chinese Herbs is an effective treatment for Covid-19 to help patients relieve symptoms and recover soon.
